For the second month in a row, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) passenger traffic has grown.  The Birmingham Airport Authority reported an increase of 6.5% in total passengers for the month of June in comparison to June 2013.  In July, over 240,000 total passengers traveled through BHM.  Passengers departing Birmingham, rose 3.3% over last July and passengers arriving in Birmingham, rose less than a percent.

In recent weeks, the Birmingham Airport Authority celebrated the completion and opening of the final phase of its terminal modernization project.  The project was initiated out of the need to overhaul the city’s 1974 airport terminal infrastructure.  “This project was out of need and designed to fit passengers’ necessities for today and support the airport’s growth for the next 20 years,” said Toni Herrera-Bast, Birmingham Airport Authority PR/Marketing Manager.   The new terminal included a transformation of the terminal’s retail and food concessions program and the addition of numerous features.  “We have several great national and local food and retail options for passengers traveling through BHM.  A few of our features include a meditation room; nursing mothers’ rooms, kids’ play areas, and family bathrooms.  Each planned with our current and future travelers in mind.  We want BHM to be a source of pride for our community as well as their choice airport,” said Bast.   BHM is an easy to navigate terminal, it has close proximity parking, and over 114 daily flights to over 43 cities.  Top destinations from BHM include Orlando, Baltimore, Tampa, Las Vegas, and La Guardia.  “Aside from our destinations, BHM connects to at least five major hubs so our passengers can get anywhere they need and want to go.” said Bast.
